Homeschooling doesn't work

The supporter of homeschooling promote that homeschooling is surely beneficial for the relationship between parents and children and even help children live more happily and healthy.
However, behind the perfect ideal of homeschooling, it conceals the appalling truth in the reality. The serious problems of homeschooling are revealed continually recently such as the fierce conflict between parents and children and also the problem of the abusing. According to the Coalition for responsible of Home Schooling, there were 94 cases of fatalities in homeschooling of America from 2000 to the present due to” the abusing of physical, verbal and emotional, confinement and food deprivation , isolation and totalistic families, sexual, adoption and special needs, medical neglect and identity abuse, trafficking and missing children.”
Lately, there was a case of abusing of physical. According to the Homeschooling's Invisible Children (Rachel, 2014), which is based on the documents of newspapers,
on February 6, 2014, Horn Lake, Mississippi “11-year-old Tyler Raines was found dead in his home, covered with bruises and malnourished.” Tyler was homeschooled by his father and stepmother for two years; he was not allowed to go outside and also been exhibited from relatives and biological mother. Their parents were accused of “the capital murder and felonious child abuse and neglect.”
From the report of medical neglect abusing (clmccracken, 2014), on January 12, 2014, North Dakota” Aidan Edward Bossingham, age 13, was starved to death by his mother, Jessica Lee Jensen. He weighed 21 pounds when he died.” Aidan was a homeschooling child, diagnosed with a human growth hormone deficiency, but his mother did not give him the medical care or bring him to see doctor. Finally, the mother was accused of the murder.”
The abusing affair was not only happened on American but also happened on Taiwanese. According to Pound Pup Legacy (Kerry and Niels, 2009), on February, 11, 2009, a 16 year old boy who was educated at home was adopted by his “biological aunt Tai-Ling (Han) Gigliottiat at age 4 in Taiwan” was founded that he was beaten to his arm broken and also covered with “bruises and lacerations” for three years in Spring Hill, Florida, United States
From the abusing of cases of homeschooling, the reports uncover the truth of homeschooling, presenting the problem of homeschooling in the reality. Homeschooling may become a great danger for child, since children may have no access to the outside world for help. However, the fact of serious problems in homeschooling of reality seems to remind and promote the government and institute to face and cope with the truth so that homeschooling may not continually turn out to be the tool of committing sins for any adults.

  1. You give me another side of homeschooling education. Even children have more freedom in homeschooling than go to school, yet if homeschooling is abused by parents, it means the exit for children to run away is hard, for they don't have chance to get this kind of information. I think there will be some relevant laws aims to avoid such situation happens and, still, every law has its loopholes. What is homeschooling's loophole in the laws? What is the solution to this situation? Should homeschooling being examined more thoroughly? Like you say in presentation, having social workers to help supervising homeschooling family will be a good method. I think there must be more answer to this problems. You can also find some examples in other western countries, after all, these countries have developed this homeschooling system more earlier than Taiwan.

  2. Honestly, never did I ever think that the possibility of homeschooling could actually lead to the problem of abusing affair. Thus, I think your annotation every time gave me a deeper understanding about the issue of homeschooling. Yet, since you mentioned the abusing affair of homeschooling, I wonder if there is any regulations or legislation draft going on to protect the security of homeschooling children? For that you wrote, ”According to the Coalition for responsible of Home Schooling, there were 94 cases of fatalities in homeschooling of America from 2000 to the present...”, and it seemed that the problems had become more and more serious.

  3. I think, besides uncovering the truth of abusing in homeschooling, it more vital to investigate the factors of homeschooling. I just read a news several days ago, which indicates that the fatalities in Taiwanese children in surprisingly high amongst developed countries, again emphasizing the seriousness of problem and all of related organizations should put more efforts into knowing it. If the social workers would go conducting home interview for evaluating the effect of homeschooling one by one, I think the children should get access to a specific channel, such as journal or email, that is only available by the social workers understanding better the learning condition and possibly find out those covered by parents' deliberation.

  4. Yes, social workers are a good way for children to talk about the problem through such as journal or email. Maybe the government shall set the institute to investigate the family regularly. Thank you for your good idea!

  5. Dear Grace, compare to the annotations you composed before, this time it is a totally different stance from them, which shed light on my eyes. This time you offer several opposite crucial cases against home-schooling. They shock me because I didn’t know about how terrible disadvantage could be. And I’m persuaded by this annotation. I think it is a success because you have one more person stand with in terms of the annotation this time. And because it is so persuasive (you just give us the terrible images of homeschooling), that I am really looking forward your upcoming opinions and ideas to fight against this topic.
PS. I’m quite curious about the picture with a little boy and a dog in it. Is it one of the terrible cases?

  7. This article suggest another idea of homeschooling, and which is standing at a relatively negative side. Homeschooling might become a way of committing crime or abuse to children, however, those tragedy is also possible in every kinds of family. The most important is whether the social worker or the social problem department of government have actually do their work and inspect and take care of the benefit of children. To my opinion, homeschooling may be one of the causes to the abuse, but it is hard to become a reason why the oppossite should fight against it, for that will be somehow "put the cart before the horse."

    1. Your insight and opinion make me rethink the problem of the abuse. Indeed, the cases of the abuse may happen not only in homeschooling family but also the usual family; while the children of homeschooling may get the less chance to call out for help if their parents do not let them go out. Thank you for your good suspicion of the issue of the abuse. You make me to see the different side of the abuse and the weakness of the opposite argument. .I will try to consider completely.

  8. Dear Grace,
Sorry for responding late. These two pieces of news you found are specific and it’s very good to provide concrete examples. However, I would like to know whether there are negative examples in Taiwan. Although one of the examples you provided was about Taiwanese, it was the Taiwanese in the U.S. Home schooling is seldom seen in Taiwan, so I think you can discuss the reason behind this phenomenon. Also I would like to know why the parents chose home schooling but then abused their children at home. In the first case, Aidan was a homeschooling child, diagnosed with a human growth hormone deficiency. Did the parents chose home schooling because their child had disease but then found that they couldn’t take care of their diseased child properly? The factor of children with disease could also be discussed.

    1. Dear Angel, thank you for your precious advice for discussing the factor and reason behind the abuse. I will try my best to find out the cases in Taiwan. I have been searched hard on the internet, but it is still difficult to find out. Maybe the homeschooling is still not popular in Taiwan. If you see any information of the abuse case of homeschooling, please share with me. Your all questions make me rethink deeply. Thank you for reading my article carefully.

  9. First, I appreciate that your plentiful resources and detailed examples, so I can know the viewpoint easily. And you mentioned that “Homeschooling may become a great danger for child, since children may have no access to the outside world for help.” I agree with you very much. In Taiwan, several domestic violence cases are discovered by teachers or classmates. Besides, the fierce conflict between parents and children is a big potential element to cause abusing. If you are a homeschooling child, you and your parents may have smaller space to calm down than other children who go to school. So maybe you can focus on this part to highlight the disadvantages of homeschooling. What’s more, I find that the criminal of lots of homeschooling abusing cases are step-mother or father who loses his or her jobs or suffer some emotional ills. Hence, maybe you can try to find out some way to improve the situation.

  10. Dear Betty, your advice for "highlight the disadvantages of homeschooling""the fierce conflict between parents and children is a big potential element to cause abusing" "maybe you can try to find out some way to improve the situation."are the good point for to to illustrate them. But I would like to know your meaning of " If you are a homeschooling child, you and your parents may have smaller space to calm down than other children who go to school." I do not really understand of it. Thank you for your response.
