Teacher and Student Conference 2

Teacher and Student Conference 2
Proficiency
In the second time of conference, our conversation topic started from the experience with international student. If I own the insufficient knowledge about the famous trends, popular singers or films and the worldwide culture, I have no ability to communicate with people and exchange my specific opinion. It is similar to the writing of essay; if I am scarce of the observation in the realities of the society, it is impossible for me to write the new insight and critic of the issue. The professional and formal issue writing shall equip with the obviously different stances, comments and novel solutions.
My issue paper is lack of the positive and beneficial ways to solve the problem of abuse in homeschooling. I shall be familiar with the institute of protection of the abuse children such as 113 which affiliates to Ministry of Health and Welfare protection department and the mechanic of the regulations for the homeschooling. It is necessary to introduce the present lawful procedures of abuse and find out the new insight to deal with the current deficiency just as olive mentions that “What is homeschooling's loophole in the laws? What is the solution to this situation? Should homeschooling being examined more thoroughly?” Besides, Angel suggests me to take the example of Taiwan, since the different country is in the diverse system of education and politics; it is not appropriate to give all American cases for sample.
In addition, the proficiency of the homeschooling information such as history, statistics, and application are significant for me to memorize, since people may need to know the essential background of homeschooling and question the writer’s solutions. Responding to my peer comments, I will provide regulations or legislation in protection of homeschooling. The government shall set the institute to investigate the family regularly. Thanks to the Tony’s advice, he gives the new ways for me to think of the social workers that communicating through journal or email is a good way for children to talk about the problem. Another peer comment mentions that the cases of the abuse may happen not only in homeschooling family but also the usual family. This makes me rethink furtherly the problem that whether the abuse in homeschooling has more serious results. Indeed, the children of homeschooling may get the less chance to call out for help if their parents do not let them go out. The reader makes me see the different side of the abuse and the opinion of the opposite argument.
In conclusion, my essay shall contain the completed information to elaborate the two opposite’s stances. And I need to be proficient about all data and materials of homeschooling. The most important thing is that the end of the conclusion shall convey the new insight to solve the problem. And I will also explain the definition of homeschooling at the beginning, including the homeschooling name called Non-school experimental education in Taiwan. It is different from the western countries’ name of homeschooling and system.

Annotation of textbook

How to read a poem
According to Wyrick, J, it is crucial to prepare a pen to take notes when we are reading the literature work no matter the novels or poems. We shall note down the main key words and make the comments. Before reading the poem, we shall notice the biographical information of the author in order to realize the background of the pome. In addition, we can find out the clues from the title of the poem, since it may be the main idea of the poem. (Wyrick, J.,2013)
Take the poem “My Heart Leaps Up When I Behold” for example. The author is William Wordsworth born in 1770; he loves the “simple, often-overlooked things.” In the Romantic Movement, Wordsworth treasured life and nature (SHMOOP UNIVERSITY, 2014). He uses the image of a rainbow to show the beautiful nature and his passion toward the nature. He completed the poem in 1807. After browsing the information of the author, we start to analyze the poem; the speaker is the poet narrating in the first personal. And the setting is the rainbow in the nature; the only character is also the poet. The style of diction is quite simple and natural; the image of the rainbow is the symbol of the eternity which is originated from the story of Noah Ark.
The analysis of the poem contains not only the content but also the structures such as the sonnet, ballad or free verse. Sound device such as alliteration, assonance, onomatopoeia and repetitions are usually presented in the poem. The poem may also involve in the rhythm, caesuras and the meter of the Iambic pentameter like “The Child is father of the Man.”
In briefly and generally, annotating the poem shall start with the introduction such as title, author, brief content and thesis. After presenting the basic information of the poem, we can analyze the imagery or contrasting in poem. At the end of the essay, we shall make the conclusion to restate thesis and main idea.
To sum up, the six steps to annotate the literature are beneficial to compose the essay thoroughly. First, selecting a workable topic is critical for us to start the article so that it might not become the cliché. The second is presenting a clear thesis so that reader can understand immediately and directly. Third, follow literary conventions. Fourth, organize effectively. Fifth, use ample evidence. It is significant for any writer to write down the reference if you quote from other’s words or sentences. The final one is to find a pleasing conclusion. Let reader get the new insight from the conclusion. But we shall avoid assigning meanings, using material without citations and writing plot summary as the analysis. (Wyrick, J.,2013)
In conclusion, the skills of reading literature include from the background, contents to the format. And the similar tips for writing annotations of poem or any literature contain the fundamental components with information of the author, contents and structures. Writing the annotation shall equip the basic steps to become the formal articles.

Is homeschooling just for the rich?
As come to the homeschooling, the financial ability is the critical issue. Financial problem is the common suspicion of homeschooling; loss of the salary of parent is the main crisis of the homeschooling. The argument on website called Debatewise points out “homeschooling requires a parent to stay at home resulting in a loss of income.” One parent shall stay at home to educate the children, while the economic pressure and burden completely fall on the other parent. On the other hand, the cost of the tuitions, textbooks and additional cost for “extracurricular activities such as soccer, gymnastics, martial arts, piano lesson,” the field trips are also the large budget for homeschooling (Shaw, 2012). Vicki Bentley reports that “Average homeschool family spends about $900 US dollars for per student per year and the costs more than public school." (Bentley, 2013)
The specifications of main costs on homeschooling are the curriculum, supplies and equipment. For example, if the child is interested in science, parents may consider buying the books and videos and equipment such as erlenmeyer flask, bunsen burner, test tube clamp and even the expensive binocular microscope. Besides, the child may go to attend the science camp or professional training. If the family attends the institute of homeschooling, they shall pay homeschooled Group Dues. In addition, the field trips, extracurricular activities and the transportation are the great charges for parents to pay. (Slide, 2010)
Consequently, the homeschooling seems only for the high-class family to afford the expense. However, the home Scholar, Lee Binz, points out “there are still some drastic, cost-cutting strategies that will help you survive.” First, parents could teach child by themselves without “a co-op class, an accrediting agency, or a homeschooled program" which need to pay the expensive fee. The free sources of knowledge or information can be retrieved from the public library or Internet. The books, pencils and papers make the great curriculum, since they are essential equipment for learning well.  Second, parents could gain the purchases of used textbook or the recent version instead of the newest one; it can help to save amount of money. Third, parents can try to negotiate that one parent works "during the daytime” and the other works “in the evening” or one parent work “on weekdays” and the other “on weekends.” Fourth, homeschooling families could cooperate with other homschooled family together to teach others. (Binz, 2006)
In conclusion, the homeschooling is not just the privilege for the rich family. The common family or the family without abundant funds could also conduct the homeschooling if the family makes the wisdom decision on the expenditure.

Annotation 3 (Revision)

Homeschooling doesn't work

The supporter of homeschooling promote that homeschooling is surely beneficial for the relationship between parents and children and even help children live more happily and healthy.

However, behind the perfect ideal of homeschooling, it conceals the appalling truth in the reality. The serious problems of homeschooling are revealed continually recently such as the fierce conflict between parents and children and also the problem of the abusing. According to the Coalition for responsible of Home Schooling, there were 94 cases of fatalities in homeschooling of America from 2000 to the present due to” the abusing of physical, verbal and emotional, confinement and food deprivation , isolation and totalistic families, sexual, adoption and special needs, medical neglect and identity abuse, trafficking and missing children.”
Lately, there was a case of abusing of physical. According to the Homeschooling's Invisible Children (Rachel, 2014), which is based on the documents of newspapers,
on February 6, 2014, Horn Lake, Mississippi “11-year-old Tyler Raines was found dead in his home, covered with bruises and malnourished.” Tyler was homeschooled by his father and stepmother for two years; he was not allowed to go outside and also been exhibited from relatives and biological mother. Their parents were accused of “the capital murder and felonious child abuse and neglect.”
From the report of medical neglect abusing (clmccracken, 2014), on January 12, 2014, North Dakota” Aidan Edward Bossingham, age 13, was starved to death by his mother, Jessica Lee Jensen. He weighed 21 pounds when he died.” Aidan was a homeschooling child, diagnosed with a human growth hormone deficiency, but his mother did not give him the medical care or bring him to see doctor. Finally, the mother was accused of the murder.”
The abusing affair was not only happened on American but also happened on Taiwanese.       According to Pound Pup Legacy (Kerry and Niels, 2009), on February, 11, 2009, a 16 year old boy who was educated at home was adopted by his “biological aunt Tai-Ling (Han) Gigliottiat at age 4 in Taiwan” was founded that he was beaten to his arm broken and also covered with “bruises and lacerations” for three years in Spring Hill, Florida, United States
From the abusing of cases of homeschooling, the reports uncover the truth of homeschooling, presenting the problem of homeschooling in the reality. Homeschooling may become a great danger for child, since children may have no access to the outside world for help. However, the fact of serious problems in homeschooling of reality seems to remind and promote the government and institute to face and cope with the truth so that homeschooling may not continually turn out to be the tool of committing sins for any adults.
Observing these cases of the fatalities, the regulations and laws are necessary and significant for protecting children to prevent more tragedies happening. In Taiwan, the government called homeschooling as Non-school experimental education and the regulations of protecting homeschooling’s children had increased recently.
According to the Laws and regulations from Ministry of Education, if people would like to apply for homeschooling, they shall provide the “name of the experiment education, purpose, methods, content (including curriculum and teaching, learning and assessment amount of the intended use of facilities, equipment, and other items), the host with the relevant information to participate in educational and expected results of laboratory personnel,” to the Municipal or county (city) government for examination. (Article 16)Moreover, parliament members, commissioned academic groups or professional counseling agencies shall visit every homeschooled family or group in every year and publish the results of visiting to evaluate their qualification.(Article 17) (Ministry of Education, 102)
In addition, the mechanic of preventing children from not going to the school, the government also compels that children between 6 to 15 years of age shall receive compulsory education (Article 2). Besides, in the case of school-age children whose household is relocated,” the student’s new household administration authority shall provide the local compulsory education committee with a copy of the Notification to Undertake Compulsory Enrollment or School Transfer.”(Article 15) And if parents do not adhere to the warning, they “shall be fined NT$ 100”; this penalty “shall be continued until enrollment.” (Article 7, K-12 Education Administration, Ministry of Education, 2011)
However, the regulations are still not complete. The government may not detect the children who are without household registration; the children may stay in the danger of being abused by parents excused from home education. Whereas the visiting from the government, the effect of protection for children seems limited and suspected, since parents may disguise and conceal the truth of abuse.
To solve the problems, the solutions are not only the inspection  of the government but also the specific individual interview of psychology counseling for homeschooled children. As for the lack of household registration, government shall cooperate with the hospital to register every newborn babies and send out more social workers with the chief of village to investigate the populations of children thoroughly, setting the system for children's educational right in the community.
