Teacher and Student Conference 2

Teacher and Student Conference 2
Proficiency
In the second time of conference, our conversation topic started from the experience with international student. If I own the insufficient knowledge about the famous trends, popular singers or films and the worldwide culture, I have no ability to communicate with people and exchange my specific opinion. It is similar to the writing of essay; if I am scarce of the observation in the realities of the society, it is impossible for me to write the new insight and critic of the issue. The professional and formal issue writing shall equip with the obviously different stances, comments and novel solutions.
My issue paper is lack of the positive and beneficial ways to solve the problem of abuse in homeschooling. I shall be familiar with the institute of protection of the abuse children such as 113 which affiliates to Ministry of Health and Welfare protection department and the mechanic of the regulations for the homeschooling. It is necessary to introduce the present lawful procedures of abuse and find out the new insight to deal with the current deficiency just as olive mentions that “What is homeschooling's loophole in the laws? What is the solution to this situation? Should homeschooling being examined more thoroughly?” Besides, Angel suggests me to take the example of Taiwan, since the different country is in the diverse system of education and politics; it is not appropriate to give all American cases for sample.
In addition, the proficiency of the homeschooling information such as history, statistics, and application are significant for me to memorize, since people may need to know the essential background of homeschooling and question the writer’s solutions. Responding to my peer comments, I will provide regulations or legislation in protection of homeschooling. The government shall set the institute to investigate the family regularly. Thanks to the Tony’s advice, he gives the new ways for me to think of the social workers that communicating through journal or email is a good way for children to talk about the problem. Another peer comment mentions that the cases of the abuse may happen not only in homeschooling family but also the usual family. This makes me rethink furtherly the problem that whether the abuse in homeschooling has more serious results. Indeed, the children of homeschooling may get the less chance to call out for help if their parents do not let them go out. The reader makes me see the different side of the abuse and the opinion of the opposite argument.
In conclusion, my essay shall contain the completed information to elaborate the two opposite’s stances. And I need to be proficient about all data and materials of homeschooling. The most important thing is that the end of the conclusion shall convey the new insight to solve the problem. And I will also explain the definition of homeschooling at the beginning, including the homeschooling name called Non-school experimental education in Taiwan. It is different from the western countries’ name of homeschooling and system.

Annotation of textbook

How to read a poem
According to Wyrick, J, it is crucial to prepare a pen to take notes when we are reading the literature work no matter the novels or poems. We shall note down the main key words and make the comments. Before reading the poem, we shall notice the biographical information of the author in order to realize the background of the pome. In addition, we can find out the clues from the title of the poem, since it may be the main idea of the poem. (Wyrick, J.,2013)
Take the poem “My Heart Leaps Up When I Behold” for example. The author is William Wordsworth born in 1770; he loves the “simple, often-overlooked things.” In the Romantic Movement, Wordsworth treasured life and nature (SHMOOP UNIVERSITY, 2014). He uses the image of a rainbow to show the beautiful nature and his passion toward the nature. He completed the poem in 1807. After browsing the information of the author, we start to analyze the poem; the speaker is the poet narrating in the first personal. And the setting is the rainbow in the nature; the only character is also the poet. The style of diction is quite simple and natural; the image of the rainbow is the symbol of the eternity which is originated from the story of Noah Ark.
The analysis of the poem contains not only the content but also the structures such as the sonnet, ballad or free verse. Sound device such as alliteration, assonance, onomatopoeia and repetitions are usually presented in the poem. The poem may also involve in the rhythm, caesuras and the meter of the Iambic pentameter like “The Child is father of the Man.”
In briefly and generally, annotating the poem shall start with the introduction such as title, author, brief content and thesis. After presenting the basic information of the poem, we can analyze the imagery or contrasting in poem. At the end of the essay, we shall make the conclusion to restate thesis and main idea.
To sum up, the six steps to annotate the literature are beneficial to compose the essay thoroughly. First, selecting a workable topic is critical for us to start the article so that it might not become the cliché. The second is presenting a clear thesis so that reader can understand immediately and directly. Third, follow literary conventions. Fourth, organize effectively. Fifth, use ample evidence. It is significant for any writer to write down the reference if you quote from other’s words or sentences. The final one is to find a pleasing conclusion. Let reader get the new insight from the conclusion. But we shall avoid assigning meanings, using material without citations and writing plot summary as the analysis. (Wyrick, J.,2013)
In conclusion, the skills of reading literature include from the background, contents to the format. And the similar tips for writing annotations of poem or any literature contain the fundamental components with information of the author, contents and structures. Writing the annotation shall equip the basic steps to become the formal articles.

Is homeschooling just for the rich?
As come to the homeschooling, the financial ability is the critical issue. Financial problem is the common suspicion of homeschooling; loss of the salary of parent is the main crisis of the homeschooling. The argument on website called Debatewise points out “homeschooling requires a parent to stay at home resulting in a loss of income.” One parent shall stay at home to educate the children, while the economic pressure and burden completely fall on the other parent. On the other hand, the cost of the tuitions, textbooks and additional cost for “extracurricular activities such as soccer, gymnastics, martial arts, piano lesson,” the field trips are also the large budget for homeschooling (Shaw, 2012). Vicki Bentley reports that “Average homeschool family spends about $900 US dollars for per student per year and the costs more than public school." (Bentley, 2013)
The specifications of main costs on homeschooling are the curriculum, supplies and equipment. For example, if the child is interested in science, parents may consider buying the books and videos and equipment such as erlenmeyer flask, bunsen burner, test tube clamp and even the expensive binocular microscope. Besides, the child may go to attend the science camp or professional training. If the family attends the institute of homeschooling, they shall pay homeschooled Group Dues. In addition, the field trips, extracurricular activities and the transportation are the great charges for parents to pay. (Slide, 2010)
Consequently, the homeschooling seems only for the high-class family to afford the expense. However, the home Scholar, Lee Binz, points out “there are still some drastic, cost-cutting strategies that will help you survive.” First, parents could teach child by themselves without “a co-op class, an accrediting agency, or a homeschooled program" which need to pay the expensive fee. The free sources of knowledge or information can be retrieved from the public library or Internet. The books, pencils and papers make the great curriculum, since they are essential equipment for learning well.  Second, parents could gain the purchases of used textbook or the recent version instead of the newest one; it can help to save amount of money. Third, parents can try to negotiate that one parent works "during the daytime” and the other works “in the evening” or one parent work “on weekdays” and the other “on weekends.” Fourth, homeschooling families could cooperate with other homschooled family together to teach others. (Binz, 2006)
In conclusion, the homeschooling is not just the privilege for the rich family. The common family or the family without abundant funds could also conduct the homeschooling if the family makes the wisdom decision on the expenditure.

Homeschooling doesn't work

The supporter of homeschooling promote that homeschooling is surely beneficial for the relationship between parents and children and even help children live more happily and healthy.

However, behind the perfect ideal of homeschooling, it conceals the appalling truth in the reality. The serious problems of homeschooling are revealed continually recently such as the fierce conflict between parents and children and also the problem of the abusing. According to the Coalition for responsible of Home Schooling, there were 94 cases of fatalities in homeschooling of America from 2000 to the present due to” the abusing of physical, verbal and emotional, confinement and food deprivation , isolation and totalistic families, sexual, adoption and special needs, medical neglect and identity abuse, trafficking and missing children.”
Lately, there was a case of abusing of physical. According to the Homeschooling's Invisible Children (Rachel, 2014), which is based on the documents of newspapers,
on February 6, 2014, Horn Lake, Mississippi “11-year-old Tyler Raines was found dead in his home, covered with bruises and malnourished.” Tyler was homeschooled by his father and stepmother for two years; he was not allowed to go outside and also been exhibited from relatives and biological mother. Their parents were accused of “the capital murder and felonious child abuse and neglect.”
From the report of medical neglect abusing (clmccracken, 2014), on January 12, 2014, North Dakota” Aidan Edward Bossingham, age 13, was starved to death by his mother, Jessica Lee Jensen. He weighed 21 pounds when he died.” Aidan was a homeschooling child, diagnosed with a human growth hormone deficiency, but his mother did not give him the medical care or bring him to see doctor. Finally, the mother was accused of the murder.”
The abusing affair was not only happened on American but also happened on Taiwanese.       According to Pound Pup Legacy (Kerry and Niels, 2009), on February, 11, 2009, a 16 year old boy who was educated at home was adopted by his “biological aunt Tai-Ling (Han) Gigliottiat at age 4 in Taiwan” was founded that he was beaten to his arm broken and also covered with “bruises and lacerations” for three years in Spring Hill, Florida, United States
From the abusing of cases of homeschooling, the reports uncover the truth of homeschooling, presenting the problem of homeschooling in the reality. Homeschooling may become a great danger for child, since children may have no access to the outside world for help. However, the fact of serious problems in homeschooling of reality seems to remind and promote the government and institute to face and cope with the truth so that homeschooling may not continually turn out to be the tool of committing sins for any adults.
Observing these cases of the fatalities, the regulations and laws are necessary and significant for protecting children to prevent more tragedies happening. In Taiwan, the government called homeschooling as Non-school experimental education and the regulations of protecting homeschooling’s children had increased recently.
According to the Laws and regulations from Ministry of Education, if people would like to apply for homeschooling, they shall provide the “name of the experiment education, purpose, methods, content (including curriculum and teaching, learning and assessment amount of the intended use of facilities, equipment, and other items), the host with the relevant information to participate in educational and expected results of laboratory personnel,” to the Municipal or county (city) government for examination. (Article 16)Moreover, parliament members, commissioned academic groups or professional counseling agencies shall visit every homeschooled family or group in every year and publish the results of visiting to evaluate their qualification.(Article 17) (Ministry of Education, 102)
In addition, the mechanic of preventing children from not going to the school, the government also compels that children between 6 to 15 years of age shall receive compulsory education (Article 2). Besides, in the case of school-age children whose household is relocated,” the student’s new household administration authority shall provide the local compulsory education committee with a copy of the Notification to Undertake Compulsory Enrollment or School Transfer.”(Article 15) And if parents do not adhere to the warning, they “shall be fined NT$ 100”; this penalty “shall be continued until enrollment.” (Article 7, K-12 Education Administration, Ministry of Education, 2011)
However, the regulations are still not complete. The government may not detect the children who are without household registration; the children may stay in the danger of being abused by parents excused from home education. Whereas the visiting from the government, the effect of protection for children seems limited and suspected, since parents may disguise and conceal the truth of abuse.
To solve the problems, the solutions are not only the inspection  of the government but also the specific individual interview of psychology counseling for homeschooled children. As for the lack of household registration, government shall cooperate with the hospital to register every newborn babies and send out more social workers with the chief of village to investigate the populations of children thoroughly, setting the system for children's educational right in the community.

Reflection 1

Reflection 1 (Teacher and student first conference)

The first conference with the teacher makes me rethink about my essay further. I lack of a sense of broaden insight to face challenges of difficulties beyond the perfect ideal of homeschooling. Although it seems to be wonderful to persuade people to accept the varieties of benefits, there still exist the serious problems in homeschooling such as the fierce conflict between parents and children, abusing of verbal or body toward children or financial problems. There are many important aspects of homeschooling waiting for revealing and discussion, and I shall turn my way to focus on “homeschooling doesn't work.”
The two opposite sides of homeschooling in the article shall be more powerful and makes people feel both reasonable but hard to make the decision; at the end, I shall make the resolution and compare them in order. I need to stand at the opposite side of homeschooling to get the viewpoints and to respond toward the supportive side of homeschooling by using side by side or point by point; otherwise, my essay will just write the knowledge that people have already known. What I need to do is to uncover the real truth beyond the idealism and perfection of homeschooling and find out the reason to deal with the difficulties and set up the new strategy.
Besides, I can provide some new information of the new way of homeschooling such as learning together with the other family of homeschooling in community (collective homeschooling community)or learning online with the innovative technology at home with parents; not only telling people the traditional fashion of homeschooling but also the present and the future condition and expectation. Thanks to the peer comments, I will discuss more part of socialization(overprotect parents) and economic (double-incomes) problems of home education; I will also try to find out the examples of Taiwanese and compare western and oriental (especially in Taiwan )homeschooling. In addition, the books of suggestion are beneficial for me to read and learn from them. As for my essay construction, I will notice about the coherence between example and issue and also the forms of the quotations and references.
In conclusion, I get the significant point and key to write a good professional essay; that is, I shall own the deep and wide vision to observe the questions and key points rather than using my stereotype and emotion to judge or ignore the other opinion. I shall stand on the high place to see whole the world thoroughly instead of staying at my narrow and inadequate knowledge to represent the globe. No matter in writing essay or being the wisdom leader or a researcher, I shall value the benefits in the both majority and individuals, and use the objective way to view the issue instead of following the trend of sight.

Structure of Homeschooling's annotations

Do homeschooling’s children lack of the ability in communication of society?

The questions of socialization come out as majority of people think of homeschooling. The quite important part of education is socialization. From the dictionary, it defines that “socialization is a continuing process where by an individual acquires a personal identity and learns the norms, values, behavior, and social skills appropriate to his or her social position.” And the significant way for socialization is through communicating with others so that people may know their self-identity and      the skills of cooperation with others in the society. Besides, human beings who live in the world shall convey their messages through interaction with each other, so the ability of communication in society is essential learning process for children. Consequently, homeschooling seems to deprive the right of children’s communication with peers in public schools.
According to Education Policy Analysis Archives, the opposites of homeschooling refer that “the students who are homeschooled will not be able to cope with the harsh realities of life beyond their family environment (Luffman, 1997).” There is other similar argue statement that” homeschooled children will be unprepared for the harsh and competitive nature of the labor market.” From the aspect of arguments above, homeschooling seems to confine children in the limited environment of home and isolate children from the world. Another argument reveals that “parents know full well what the dominant social attitudes, beliefs and understandings are, and they have deliberately chosen to teach their kids something else.” Therefore, children of homeschooling may not receive the variety of concepts of knowledge, cultures and ethnic backgrounds. In addition, the opposite are worried that homeschooled children might lack of the tolerance and adaption in society. (Gene V Glass, 1999) As a result, they may have difficulties in communicating with people as they enter to the society in the future.
However, the supporters of homeschooling debate that “the average home schooled student is regularly involved in eight social activities outside the home (Van Pelt, 2003, p.90). These include afternoon and weekend programs with public school students (e.g., sports, scouts, church groups, ballet, Little League, neighborhood play, part-time employment, and voluntary work), and day-time field trips and cooperative programs with groups of other home schooled students (Mattox, 1999).” (Patrick Basham, John Merrifield, and Claudia R. Hepburn, 2007) The supporters show the fact that children who are in homeschooling seem to own more opportunities and time to be exposed in the variety of social groups rather than merely in the public school for all day. In contrast to the homeschooled children, the students of public school are regulated in the regular daily schedules so they have limited time to participate different kinds of activities outside the school. They are usually confined in the small spaces to learn the subjects without getting more information of international aspects. While the children of homeschooling may have opportunity to travel around the world to learn the history instead of only memorizing the knowledge in the books; hike to the numerous mountains in height for camping to learn self- independence and geography of the world; attend the performance of opera singers or different instruments in theater to appreciate the music. Once they encounter with the international people, they may get more ideas to exchange their thoughts with others and attend more international affairs. Consequently, they own the ability of interaction with people and get the lots of chances to communicate with society.
There are three awesome examples of attending international affairs and acquire the ability of communication. From the report of Mujen Chinese Christian Home Educators Association (May 7, 2013), three Taiwanese homeschooled students, Hui Jie (Rebecca) Chen, 15, of Yilan, Taiwan, Emma McDaniel, 13, of Inman, SC, and Emily Fabre, 12, of Salem, the newest in a long line of homeschooled students who offer real-life examples of the benefits of homeschooling, received International Volunteering Awards at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. “Chen has raised more than $10,000 for the poor over the past six years; last year alone she donated nearly 5,000 pounds of rice to East Africa in response to a news report about famine on that continent. McDaniel uses her couponing skills to acquire food and hygiene items for those in need, hosts an annual fashion show that has raised over $8,000 for disadvantaged children, and gives speeches on using coupons to help others. Fabre collects recyclable bottles and cans to help a local agency fund a transportation service for senior citizens and has raised $1,500 so far, which has been used to buy new tires for the Council on Aging’s vans.” These three children of homeschooling show their actual actions toward the international needs. Besides, during the process of raising funds, children may need to communicate with friends or strangers, explaining the activity of donation to the public and negotiate the difficulties so that they may possess the capability to deal with the problems and communicate in the society.
Moreover, the homeschooling children own abundant creativity and imaginations in their minds rather than just following the rules and opinions of teacher’s authorities in class. Additionally, homeschooling children frequently interact with different ages of learners in the community of learning network rather than simply coping with the same age of peers in class of public school or even speaking with not one person during the school’s time. (Gene V Glass, 1999)
In conclusion, homeschooling provides children the unlimited stage to develop their talent and fulfill more splendid things in the world. Furthermore, they own the actual ability to communicate with people from their countries to the globe.

Once they encounter with the international people, they may get more ideas to exchange their thoughts with others and attend more international affairs .
Fabre collects recyclable bottles and cans to help a local agency fund a transportation service for senior citizens and has raised $1,500 so far, which has been used to buy new tires for the Council on Aging’s vans.”
Moreover, the homeschooling children own abundant creativities and imaginations in their minds rather than just following the rules and opinions of teacher’s authorities in class. Additionally, homeschooling children frequently interact with different ages of learners in the community of learning network rather than simply coping with the same age of peers in class of public school or even speaking with not one person during the school’s time. (Gene V Glass, 1999)
In conclusion, homeschooling provides children the unlimited stage to develop their talent and fulfill more awesome things in the world. Furthermore, they own the actual ability to communicate with people from their countries to the globe.

What are the benefits of home schooling?

According to the Family Education, home schooling increases with a growth rate of 7 to 15 percent per year. There are about two million children currently schooling at home and parents usually cultivate excellent children from eight main aspects of home schooling.
First, it is free for parents to choose various materials of education for each child (Shaw, 2000-2014).Generally, in the public school; students shall follow the learning process and the programs to learn different subjects. However, the courses may be too easy or difficult for individuals, but teachers have no ability to care and teach specific child who has difficulty in learning. Or some children who are superior to others, they may need extra special courses and another ways to develop their potential. In contrast, home schooling provides time and space for children to learn the knowledge according to their degree of intelligence and appropriate courses.

In addition, children who are educated at home can not only just learn the subjects in regular small rooms, but they have more opportunities to learn from the outside worlds such as museums, national parks, forests, mountains, oceans, airplanes, amusement parks, theaters and exhibitions. These varieties of learning approaches offer children to own the international insights and outlooks to negotiate with the global world. Comparing to the children who are studying in the traditional school, they are usually confined in the specific space to get the limited knowledge of the world trends. Consequently, children in the public school possess the less opinion toward the issues, because they frequently receive the knowledge without asking questions or thinking about the reasons. Teachers in the school gives the answers for students first rather than giving them the questions to solve the problems. Since teachers shall teach students according to   the stipulations of schedule.
While the children of home schooling, parents can train children’s ability to solve the difficult questions such as science’s signs, math’s logic's instead of only giving children the theories and results. For example, the most famous inventor whose name was Thomas Edison was a home schooled child. According to Jim Powell, he described Edison that” as a home-schooled, self-educated youth, Edison learned lessons that were to serve him all his life. He learned education was his own responsibility. He learned to take initiative. He learned to be persistent. He learned he could gain practical knowledge, inspiration and wisdom by reading books. He learned to discover all kinds of things from methodical observation. He learned education is a continuing, joyful process.” Most of Edison's inventions fall into eight main categories: batteries, electric lights and power, phonographs and sound recording, cement, mining, motion pictures, telegraphs and telephones (Barksdale, 1998-2014).Homeschooled kids who are excelled at standardized tests are also welcomed to the colleges and universities. And as these children become adults, they have good characteristics such as self-directed, self- disciplined, creativity, honesty and reliance to be the trusty employees.

Is home schooling really beneficial for children?
Introduction
The motive for me to write this essay is that I am interesting in education; my mother would like to promote home schooling for people, and my sister may consider home schooling for her future children. How about me? I think it again and again. First, I would like to share with you about my experience. I studied in the public junior high school; there was a home schooling child coming to our class one day. My classmate criticized the home schooling child that he was so strange and different from other people. Since he was quite silent, polite and pure, however; my classmate could not accept this kind of simple boy. He was totally different from other student in public school. From then, I kept the confusion that whether home schooling was an eccentric thing and children would isolate from everyone. While I got the answer this summer camp after communicating with four homeschooling's families who came from Virginia, I understand the mechanics and functions about the home schooling; I change my worst stereotype of home schooling. In addition, I find the research shows that lots of families cultivate lots of genius in home schooling. According to The Huffington Post (Klein, 2013 ), they have compiled famous 18 instances where home schooling seems to have worked exceptionally well. I will introduce these geniuses in the essay later. I think that these geniuses might have found their goal and aim in their early ages, in the contrary; I still did not really know what my aim was in the future in my adolescent age. Since the peer and grade pressure became my burden in my school life, no teachers had extra time to assist me to develop my talent. Whereas the homeschooling, it may provide time for children to cultivate their talent to be exceptional one in early age.

Issue paper- Jump out the box to see home schooling

Recently, home schooling becomes popular in the worldwide such as in America (2 million school-age students), Australia (1,878 families 3,children). But it is still not so popular in Taiwan. Although the home schooling gradually increases this years (last years 436 cases, this years 616 cases, growth 41 ), the most parents still choose public school for children. However, lots of parents are not satisfied with the public school any more, there are  many problems in the public school system such as  children may learn the negative behavior, words and thinking in the public school. The motive for me to write this essay is that I am interesting in education ; my mother  would like to promote home schooling for people, and my sister may consider home schooling for her future children. .  But how about me? I think it again and again. First, I would like to share with you about my experience. I studied in the public school ; there was a home schooling child coming to our class one day. And my daily life was full of test and lessons. I did not really know what my aim was in the future. I think that home schooling may provide time for children to search their dream early.

While there still exists the debate and severe problem in home schooling in Taiwan. I will discuss the opposition and find out the new solution to solve the problems . And  I would like to break down the myth of home schooling.

I collect some debate from the website (family education) about the home schooling.
